Congratulations to the Graduate Students for Awards received.

The Department of Political Science Award Committee is pleased to announce the nominees and winners of the 2015-2016 paper and and thesis competition. Congratulations to all the Nominees and Winners of the Political Science 2015-2016 Awards The Awards Luncheon was held on Tuesday, Sept 27th 12-2 pm in the Cassio Room, MacEwan Conference & Events Centre.  

Congratulations to Dr. Tom Flanagan who has won a Faculty of Graduate Studies, My Supervisor Skills, GREAT Supervisor Award!

The award is in recognition of his extraordinary contribution to graduate education in our Department. Apart from his frequent service on graduate examination committees, he has supervised six PhDs (most recently, Dr. Tim Anderson) and thirteen MA students over the course of his long career, many of whom have gone on to play significant roles in the life of the Canadian polity.

Tom received his award from the Dean Lisa Young of the Faculty of Graduate Studies, Thursday, September 22, 2016 in the new Taylor Institute.

Political Science would like to extend a warm welcome to Kim-Lee Tuxhorn who will be joining the department effectively July 1st, 2016.

Kim-Lee Tuxhorn - I study international relations with an emphasis in international/comparative political economy and international organizations. My research interests span the issue-areas of trade, monetary policy, and foreign investment.

 

Congratulations to Bonnie Walter on meeting the completion requirements to achieve a Certificate for EMERGING LEADERS through Continuing Education at the University of Calgary. This program was completed over 2 years. The graduation ceremony took place June 15th, 2016 at the Red & White Club. This is Bonnie's second certificate. She completed her first certificate in General Management, 2005. 

The #ICameAsARefugee campaign launched on June 20th, 2016, featuring one of our own in the department, Pablo Policzer.

On behalf of the Graduate Program, please join us in congratulating Elizabeth Pando-Burciaga and her husband Carlos on the birth of their beautiful daughter, Octavia! Octavia was born June 7th at the Foothills Hospital, 3.16 kg and 48 cm. Elizabeth tell us that Octavia is very healthy and that they are loving every second of the time spent with her. Elizabeth and Carlos also wish to thank everyone for the friendship, encouragement and support they felt during the pregnancy.

Elizabeth is a PhD Candidate in the 4th year of her program, under the supervision of Dr. Susan Franceschet. 

Roberta Rice research supported by a Knowledge Synthesis SSHRC grant on indigenous rights and global resources is showcased in the Research section of the UToday.

Congratulations to CHANCE MINNETT WATCHEL on receiving the 2016 Canadian Political Science Association Poster Prize     for his submission: "Private Delivery of Public Social Policy in Canada's Most Socially Conservative Province: Explaining Gay and Lesbian Adoption Policy in Alberta".                                                                                                                Photo by:  CPSA

CONGRATULATIONS to all of our students convocating today.  

One political science student, Kalista Lepka, is profiled in the UToday will be convocating this afternoon with a Bachelor of Arts degree.  After graduating, her plans consist on law school specializing in aboriginal law and sustainable energy. On behalf of the Graduate Program, please join me in congratulating Paul Boakye and Johana on the birth of their first child, Nana Efua Boakye! Nana was born here in Calgary on April 29th, 2016, weighing 7 lbs. Both mother and daughter are doing very well. Boakye is currently putting the final touches on his MA thesis, written under Dr. Don Ray's supervision, and will soon be heading to the University of Saskatchewan to start his PhD program. We wish Boakye, Johana, and Nana all the best in this year of new beginnings!

     The Department recently celebrated the 36 year career of Dr. Ray who retired in the Fall. To honour his long years of service and dedication to students, the Don I. Ray Paper Prize will be awarded annually to the best undergraduate paper in a Political Science course on the topic of social justice. In the photo to the left, the Head of the Department, Dr. Brenda O'Neill, is presenting Dr. Ray with the plaque that will be mounted in the Department to identify winners of the award.

As part of its current curriculum review exercise, the Department of Political Science administered surveys to its political science and international relations majors to get their feedback on both programs. The response rate for each survey was excellent and the data will prove extremely useful.

Pablo Policzer was nominated and selected as a finalist for the 20th Annual Immigrants of Distinction Awards in  the Hadassah Ksienski Lifetime Achievement category. The Award Recipients were announced at the Gala held March 11, 2016 at the Westin Hotel.  The gala honours contributions and achievements of excellence of immigrants and refugees in the Calgary community.  Congratulations Pablo!

Congratulations to Nidhi Panwar, for winning a Mitacs Globalink Research Award! This award will help support her travel and
research related costs as well as provide a modest student stipend as Nidhi travels to the University of Delhi to begin research on her project, "Communalism and Terrorism in India".
