Terry Terriff

Dr. Terriff is a Professor in the Deparment of Politic Science, the Arthur L. Child Chair of American Security Policy and a Senior Fellow in the Centre for Military, Security and Strategic Studies (CMSS).  Before joining the Department of Political Science in July 2008, he was a member of the Department of Political Science and International Studies, University of Birmingham, UK for twelve and half years.  Dr. Terriff is Editor, Journal of Miltiary and Strategic Studies, a Calgary-based open access on-line journal and was formerly Editor of the international journal Contemporary Security Policy from 2001 to 2005.

Current Research

Dr. Terriff is currently leading a research project, with four US-based colleagues, that examines the role of mid-ranked officers in military innovation in the five US miilitary serves in the years after the war in Vietnam.   He is also working on a book on military change in the US Marine Corps from Vietnam to the second Iraq War, a subject on which he has published several articles and given numerous presentations. 

Areas of Supervision

Dr. Terriff is interested in supervising graduate students working in the areas of: change in military organizations, the US military, US security and foreign policy, transatlantic security relations and/or NATO, changing character of warfare and strategic culture.  Dr. Terriff will also consider supervising selected topics in the general fields of strategic and security studies.
