PhD Program

MA Program

Length

Our recommended time to completion is 4 years
(max.: 6 years):

  • Year 1 - Course work
  • Year II - Candidacy completed
  • Year III & IV - Dissertation

Our recommended time to completion is 2 years
(max.: 4 years):

  • Year I - Course work
  • Year II - Thesis

Funding

All admitted PhD students receive guaranteed
funding
for four years:

  • Your funding offer will generally range from
    $25,000 to $30,000 in Year I and II and
    $16,000 to $18,000 in Year III and IV, when
    tuition fees are lower.
  • Funding offers generally are made up of a
    teaching assistant position as well as
    scholarship money.
  • Your tuition fees are not included in the funding
    offer and must be paid separately.

  • Your funding offer will generally range from
    $18,000 to $22,000 in Year I and $10,000 to
    $12,000 in Year II, when tuition fees are lower.
  • Funding offers generally are made up of a
    teaching assistant position as well as
    scholarship money.
  • Your tuition fees are not included in the funding
    offer and must be paid separately.

Office Space

As a PhD student, you are guaranteed a desk in a
shared office space for 6 years.

As a MA student, you are guaranteed a desk in a
shared office space for 3 years.

Courses

You will complete a minimum of 18 units or 3.0 Full-
course equivalents (i.e., 6 x one-semester courses)
in Year I.

Candidacy

As PhD student, you are required to complete 5
candidacy requirements by Year II:

  • Required Course Work
  • 2 x Field of Study (FoS) Written Examination
  • 1 x Field of Study (FoS) Oral Examination
  • Thesis Proposal and Meeting
  • Optional Language Requirement

Thesis

Working with your Supervisor and Supervisory
Committee, as a PhD student, you will research,
write, and defend a doctoral dissertation of
approximately 250-300 pages.
Working with your Supervisor, as a MA student, you
will research, write and defend a MA thesis of
approximately 100 pages.
