On behalf of the Graduate Program, please join us in congratulating Sara Skinner and Bryan Winger on the birth of their son, Conrad John Winger, born October 5th in Calgary.  Conrad was 6 pounds, 8 ounces, and, according to Sara:  “healthy and happy, and they are settling into a new routine at home”!  We wish Sara, Bryan and Conrad all our best!  CONGRATULATIONS!

Sara is a PhD Candidate in our PhD program, under the supervision of Dr. Maureen Hiebert.

The Department of Political Science had an award lunch for the nominees and awards winners on September 25th. Congratulations to all our nominees and winners for 2016-2017. 

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Brenda O'Neill from the Department of Political Science has received a GREAT Supervisor Award from the Faculty of Graduate Studies at the University of Calgary. This annual award recognizes the excellent mentorship, dedication, and support for the graduate education provided by a faculty member in a graduate program.  Well done Dr. O'Neill!

We are pleased to report that, at the September 2017 Prairie Political Science Association (PPSA) meeting in Banff, Alberta, two of the three Essay contest awards were won by students whose winning essays came out of courses in the Department of Political Science at the University of Calgary.  The PPSA Best Graduate Paper was awarded to Michael Walz, for "Genocide in Rwanda: Why the United States Did Not Intervene". The PPSA Best Paper on Prairie Politics was awarded to our own Connor Molineaux, for "Federal-Provincial Relations and Conservatism in The Canadian West". Connor is currently pursuing his MA in the Department.

Heather Exner-Pirot and Jen Sidorova attended the Ninth International Congress of Arctic Social Sciences held in Umea, Sweden, June 8-12, 2017. 

Heather Exner-Pirot received her PhD degree at the Department of Political Science, University of Calgary in 2011 under the supervision of Dr. Rob Huebert. Jen Sidorova is a PhD Candidate at the University of Calgary under the supervision of Dr. Robert Huebert. 

The Department of Political Science Award Committee is pleased to announce the nominees and winners of the 2015-2016 paper and and thesis competition. Congratulations to all the Nominees and Winners of the Political Science 2015-2016 Awards The Awards Luncheon was held on Tuesday, Sept 27th 12-2 pm in the Cassio Room, MacEwan Conference & Events Centre.  

Congratulations to Dr. Tom Flanagan who has won a Faculty of Graduate Studies, My Supervisor Skills, GREAT Supervisor Award!

The award is in recognition of his extraordinary contribution to graduate education in our Department. Apart from his frequent service on graduate examination committees, he has supervised six PhDs (most recently, Dr. Tim Anderson) and thirteen MA students over the course of his long career, many of whom have gone on to play significant roles in the life of the Canadian polity.

Tom received his award from the Dean Lisa Young of the Faculty of Graduate Studies, Thursday, September 22, 2016 in the new Taylor Institute.

On behalf of the Graduate Program, please join us in congratulating Elizabeth Pando-Burciaga and her husband Carlos on the birth of their beautiful daughter, Octavia! Octavia was born June 7th at the Foothills Hospital, 3.16 kg and 48 cm. Elizabeth tell us that Octavia is very healthy and that they are loving every second of the time spent with her. Elizabeth and Carlos also wish to thank everyone for the friendship, encouragement and support they felt during the pregnancy.

Elizabeth is a PhD Candidate in the 4th year of her program, under the supervision of Dr. Susan Franceschet. 

Congratulations to CHANCE MINNETT WATCHEL on receiving the 2016 Canadian Political Science Association Poster Prize     for his submission: "Private Delivery of Public Social Policy in Canada's Most Socially Conservative Province: Explaining Gay and Lesbian Adoption Policy in Alberta".                                                                                                                Photo by:  CPSA

On behalf of the Graduate Program, please join me in congratulating Paul Boakye and Johana on the birth of their first child, Nana Efua Boakye! Nana was born here in Calgary on April 29th, 2016, weighing 7 lbs. Both mother and daughter are doing very well. Boakye is currently putting the final touches on his MA thesis, written under Dr. Don Ray's supervision, and will soon be heading to the University of Saskatchewan to start his PhD program. We wish Boakye, Johana, and Nana all the best in this year of new beginnings!

Congratulations to Nidhi Panwar, for winning a Mitacs Globalink Research Award! This award will help support her travel and
research related costs as well as provide a modest student stipend as Nidhi travels to the University of Delhi to begin research on her project, "Communalism and Terrorism in India".

Evan Wilson was listed in the Avenue Magazine's annual Top 40 Under 40.  Evan Wilson graduated in 2009 with an MA in the Department of Political Science under the supervision of Brenda O'Neill.

Congratulations to Nidhi Panwar, who has won a Shastri Student Internship Project in Aid award from the Governments of      Canada and India! Funding from this award will help support research at the School for International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi in support of her MA thesis tentatively entitled “Communalism and Terrorism in India”. Nidhi is currently a first year MA student in the Department of Political Science working under the supervision of Dr. Gavin Cameron.
